The eThekwini Municipality kicked off the three-day long South Regional Business Fair
yesterday at Umlazi despite Durban’s cold chills.
Under the theme Radical Economic Transformation and its Implication on Small Business in the
Townships, the Business Fair held at KwaMnyandu Shopping Centre, saw young entrepreneurs
come together to build and grow their businesses within the same platform.
Her Worship eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede, said this gathering was a great way for people
to engage.
“There can never be real radical transformation if our people do not benefit. Today we are
having members from Ndwedwe, we are having members from Umbumbulu and also members
of Umlazi, Ispingo and in the inner city, that shows that when communities come together they
can do more,” Gumede said.
Apart from the introductory of this fair, the eThekwini Mayor, National Treasury and the
Director General of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) unveiled a
new bridge called KwaMnyandu Pedestrian Bridge.
Director General of the GCIS, Phumla Williams, speaking on behalf of Minister of
Communications Ayanda Dlodlo who was in absentia due attending the funeral of Namibian
nationalist leader Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, said it is necessary to encourage revival of the
township’s economy as well as entrepreneurs at large.
“As government, we can only tackle many of the inequities in society such as those in education,
unemployment and healthcare by bringing together a diverse set of stakeholders,” Williams said.
When asked about the significance of the bridge being unveiled on this specific day, Williams
explained that the Umlazi area has a history of violence therefore the bridge is a sign of bringing
people and townships together, and also making the shopping centre easily accessible.
Former Durban University of Technology student and entrepreneur, Zet Ghu said all went well
for his company as a first time exhibitor.
“Everything was positive for my company Afreecan Khonsirps, we are still learning and I’m
hoping to do more stuff and I think this a great platform to learn and actually grow and people
who want to do something for the public and themselves,” Ghu explained.
The Business Fair is still to continue till Sunday, June 25.
